Estonian Design Exhibition "LIGHT. THINGS. MOTION"

There were exhibitions under the same name form 2003 to 2004 in Tallinn Design Gallery, in House of the Blackheads in Riga, in Helsinki Desing Forum and in Estonian embassy in Berlin. The first exhibition mainly consisted of students course works, the collection was complemented and changed according to the rooms of exhibitions – experimental models with mature productions. In longer version there was named also St Petersburg.

Re-opened St John’s Church in St. Petersburg, in which the interior design and the great chandeliers were awarded by Kultuurkapital and ESL, gave an inspiration last year to revive the idea. Now the search for new rooms and partners continue and hopefully the selection of the newest Estonian design will be put up soon.

The World Premiere of the new exhibition takes place in Lahti Art and Design Festival at the end of August. In september the exhibition can be seen in Tallinn during the Design Night Festival.

Among the selected works authors are design-students from Tartu Art College and from Estonian Academy of Arts beside the well-known designers and the interior decorators.

In the exhibition can be seen Tarmo Luisk with humorous lights, Maria Rästas graduate work in Tartu Art College which is now produced under the name of ETNO, Margus Triibmann’s LightWeight clever series of lights, Pavel Sidorenko’s perfectly worked out light 360*, Helmet Raja’s cutting board for gurmans, Kalle Pruuden combines welding art and product design and much more.

More from graduate works from Tartu Art College can be seen: ceramical light by Mario Kroon, where the traditional porcelan painting patterns cover new shapes, and Kristiina Allik’s user-friendly, thoughtful and functional child’s cradle, where the special attention is focused on the therapeutic effect of swinging.

Dynamics are brought in by Gabriel Verilaskja’s fully self-built electiric bicycle, that can be called as hybrid. By cranking can save the batteries and go through 100 km with only one charging. If the weather is good, he will drive to the Lahti exhibition himself.

The initiators of deciding were the outstanding works by students. Based on them I started to complement and find the meaning for the collection. In addition to lights, the word what widens the title this time is movement and everything that comes with inner glowing – as the title promised.
Curator Tõnis Vellama.

Lithuanian Design - Past, Present, Future
By the past we mean Soviet times, the times when there was no choice. In this “seller dominated” market there was still place for design as we understood it. Were we that different back then? In 2012, Lithuania saw the first edition of the Lithuanian national design prize Geras Dizainas (‘Good design’). This is our present, recognized and awarded. Future - this year’s student design award ‘Young designer prize’ opened up a fresh perspective.

The different eras designers are: Indra Marcinkevičienė, Mindaugas Žilionis, Martynas Kazimierėnas, Jonas Jurgaitis, Justin Hugg, Inesa Malafej, Arūnas Sukarevičius, Rita Kazokaitė, Asta Kaušpėdaitė, Jekaterina Lukanina, Valerija Žilėnienė, Tauras Stalnionis, Gediminas Juška, Daiva Zgrabskė, Mindaugas Žilionis, Ekaterina Lukanina, Justė Žibūdienė, Justas Petrulis, Lina Dumbravaitė, Eglė Ugintaitė, Justas Petrulis, Juozas Brundza, Aleksandr Dubickij, Petras Navickas, Monika Klupšaitė, Kristina Zakaraitė, Birutė Simokaitytė, Jonė Aleksiūnaitė, Paulius Vitkauskas, Žilvinas Stankevičius, Rimantas Rolia.

Exhibition "JUST A THING" (Poland)

Exhibition by Agnieszka Jacobson Cielecka, renowned Polish curator of design expositions features 10 works of 10 Polish designers and design groups, namely Aze design, Beton, Paweł Grobelny, Krystian
Kwieciński, Lapolka, Malafor, Bartosz Mucha, Piotr Stolarski, Arek Wolski and Łukasz Wysoczyński.

All of them are gifted designers whose works show amazing imagination, passion and a sense of humour; they provoke, make us think about the role of design in our life, prove that simple questions canreceive surprising answers. The theme of JUST A THING gave the artists a chance for free interpretation. The curator set a task to designan ordinary object, the only constarint was that is should fit into a plywood box of standard dimensions of 75x75x75 cm. The result was unusual and interesting.

Organizers: The Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Regional Museum of Stalowa Wola.
