Exhibition of wood-fired sculptures in the Asuurkeraamika Studio
The exhibits were made during the Kohila International Ceramics Symposium. Wood-firing is an ancient method used in ceramics and its endless possibilities and sustainable aspects are being rediscovered by contemporary artists. The process of firing is an important part of creating the artwork and being part of that is a unique experience for an artist. The flame paints sculptures by leaving subtle shades of colour on the items. The ashes and salt which melt in the heat create a layer of glaze and the pieces of wheat bran which are blown into the oven during the firing create decorative golden spots on the surface of the items. Wood-firing never gives you two identical objects – the results are always surprising and that keeps the mind of the artist sharp. All the exhibits were fired in the anagama-type wood-firing oven, which is located in the Tohisoo mansion in Kohila, and which is unique due to its type and size in both Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. The exhibition is made in cooperation with Estonian Ceramists Association.
