6 estonian designers/designteams participate in the de-ikea project
The designers will craft a unique and individual viewpoint or a personalinterpretation of the local identity by using original IKEA products as starting point and materialsource. The multinational brand has drifted across the globe, like a multitude of otherbrands retailing the same products everywhere.
The idea is to use the ubiquitous Swedish home furnishing retailer as a source for local design interventions. Each designer will be suppliedwith 2 different items from the IKEA blanket and pillow collection, three ofeach kind.
IKEA products made in Estonia are re-designed and re-evaluated. The designers consider the multiple ways that the idea of „regional identity“is constructed and manifested and look at traditions of manufacturing that is insome way identified as local to the area.
The project points out the importance of diversity and local context and shows how a localized approach to design can be achieved with little means; byinterventing with existing artifacts in the environment.
The designers invited are: Ruumilabor - Janno Roos and Andres Labi Kärt Ojavee Kadri Viires Monika Järg Liisa Soolep
The project initiator and curator ist the Icelandic designer HrafnkellBirgisson.
