Dutch Bike Fantasy
Yksi Design at Eindhoven is arranging an exhibition called ‘Dutch Bike Fantasy’, which can be seen from 23 to 26 September during the event Design Night in Tallinn, Estonia. The exhibition consists of six remarkable bicycles plus a collection of objects consisting of bike parts or inspired by the bicycle. From a handbag and a rug made from bicycle tires to a chandelier built with bike wheels, Yksi will show a collection of remarkable objects in Tallinn. These creative expressions are partly a response to mass production or to the consumer society. At any rate they help the visitor to view reality or experience his surroundings differently. In addition six remarkable bikes will be presented, from the fastest reclining bicycles to a bike with an oak wood frame.
The design event at Tallinn, which focuses on design as a way of improving the quality of life, takes place at the Rotermann quarter, a renovated former industrial area in the centre of the Estonian capital.Â
About the designers who participate:
Goof van Beek, student at the Design Academy, will exhibit a stool using old materials in a new way. Sasja Saptenno designs accessories that can change shape. The rubber inner tubes invite you to create all kinds of organic shapes. The rubber floral rug by Jacqueline Petit is made of bicycle inner tubes and is part of the installation Inside-Outside. Michiel Martens chain cupboard will make you think about the balance between objects.Hedwig Hulshof will be exhibiting her project Ant Revolution. KREJCI Amsterdam uses unusual materials, such as used bicycle inner tubes, to make products that look rough, but attractive. After finishing his Industrial Design studies, Jan Willem van Breugel travelled through Asia by bike. That’s where he came up with the idea for Wheels-on-Fire: a chandelier based on a used bicycle wheel. Orlando Tjin Asjoe show his hat stand made from waste materials, a classic by now. Rico Souren saw a chair in a discarded bicycle. This led to Ocir which seats comfortably because of the pumped up inner tube seat. Chris Lebens has cut a bicycle frame to pieces, creating a rugged necklace. A bicycle bell and a lamp were the mould for the sugar and cream set Chico by Jacqueline Couwenberg. Yksi Design magically transformed a bicycle bell into a sort of musical box: if you ring it there is no sound but the dog runs after the sausage or the lonely cyclist rides around. Light Rapido by Wim van Zandvoort consists of a cord and plug with a switch that fits exactly into an old inner tube. Basten Leijh designed the urban bike Downtown, with a removable steering wheel as a lock. Albert Jan van Dijk won a prestigious international design contest with the Spike, now there’s a working prototype. Peter van der Veer exhibits the Cabby delivery bicycle, designed for Gazelle, as well as the SQRL skatebike. Can be used to perform jumps, wheelies or other spectacular stunts. Bram Moens shows the M5 carbon Low Racer, which set no less than eight world records, making it the fastest bike in the world. Reinier Korstanje exhibits the wooden lifestyle bike OKES. |
