Belonging to the same generation, having clearly experienced relatively similar processes in their studies and subsequent career, made similar attempts to stand out in the post-Soviet field of textile art and having similar aesthetic beliefs, the three textile artists/designers are presenting their newest work together. Interrupted times of the recent past and values lost from the society present a situation we wish to oppose ourselves to, and to preserve these values on a new level.
The past is telling stories in our creations; it is deeply rooted in them through traditions, experience, continuity and wisdom of ancestors. However, it is not repetition that we are dealing with. Being familiar with the traditions, we have taken the liberty to interpret, renew, transform and break them. Our point of departure as artists is much stronger when we know what was before and rely on it. People will lose themselves, when they wipe off their past and safely paint their walls white – denying their memories. Indeed, safety is human, but it also means standstill. It would be more courageous to build yourself up knowing and acknowledging the past, stepping out and choosing your own course. However, this burden is difficult to recommend to those who have chosen an easier path.We do not only create to express ourselves. Even being textile artists is not a matter of principle. This is simply what our strength lies in: balancing between aesthetic values and conceptuality, we are able to satisfy our artist’s ego and practical needs at the same time. It is the message and its only possible realization that are important. |
