Design campus and Design Night TENT

Design campus

Design campus is a temporary settlement in the Estonian Academy of Arts Square (Tartu mnt 1) which symbolises the traditional location of design education. There is a large tent in the middle of the design campus where seminars, workshops, fashion shows, PechaKucha Night, auction and many over interesting events take place.

The tent holds a comfortable lounge designed by Liina Vaino which is furnished with the newest products by Estonian designers. Warm North, Derelict and Since Design furniture, 4Room lights, Tekstiil Ruumis and Okka acoustic wall panels, Snakefloor wooden carpet and benches designed by interior architecture students are presented. The European grandmothers’ cake recipes exhibition is also displayed in the tent.

The space surrounding the tent is inhabited by conceptual landscape objects by the students from the Estonian Academy of Arts – a long table and homeless gardens. Liis and Karl-Erik Tarbe’s flower children house and climbing tree together with the doghouse for vain dogs are also displayed outside the tent.

As an introductory event to the lighting festival, Priit Tiimus and Eva Tallo build an image with lights which symbolises the Estonian Academy of Arts and which can only be seen in the dark. Sound design by Taavi Tulev.

NB! The festival information centre is located in the Design Night tent in the Estonian Academy of Arts Square where volunteers kindly share information about the festival. The information centre is open Thu-Sun 10-21-… Phone number: 6000 060

Design Night TENT/ Design Night lounge/ Design Night club

After all the fascinating seminars and productive workshops have finished and all the exhibitions in the city have been opened, we gather once again in the Design Night tent. During the day, information about the festival is available in the tent which is furnished mainly with pieces by Estonian designers.

But when darkness descends, the tent becomes the D’NIGHTclub. Bites to eat are served in the cosy lounge and your throat will not dry out either. During the four festival days, the Design Night film programme which examines design and architecture in Estonia and abroad is shown in the same location. The Design tent is open Thu-Sun at 10-23.

Homeless Gardens

Tallinn is full of neglected gardens which lead a hidden life. Many of them are destined to vanish. The homeless gardens which are packed into 120 1x1m Big Bags spent the summer at an exhibition at KUMU. In the autumn, the gardens start touring around again, stopping at the Estonian Academy of Arts Square during Design Night festival.

The open project by the students from the landscape architecture departments of the Estonian Academy of Arts was supervised by Katrin Koov, Maria Pukk and Ivar Lubjak.

The garden became possible thanks to the students from the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Estonian University of Life Sciences and people who took part in the Let’s Do it day of civil actions.

LAUD, gallery and a place for action

The demolition of the Estonian Academy of Arts started three years ago. LAUD (“table” in English) is an initiative designed to make use of the plot and emphasise the need for the Estonian Academy of Arts. LAUD enlivens the surrounding urban space and works as a testing ground for people’s reactions. The 50-metre desk is meant to be used and as such, it tests the boundaries of design and art. LAUD is part of the exhibition “Afterlife of Gardens” by the Kumu Art Museum of Estonia.

Authors of the installation: Eve Arpo, Grete Veskiväli, Lauri Eltermaa, Joel Kopli, Koit Ojaliiv, Juhan Rohtla, Ahti Grünberg, Tõnis Kalve.

Sound design by Taavi Tulev

Design Campus and Design Night festival tent music is designed by Taavi Tulev, who is a sound engineer, a designer of soundscapes. His point of departure is nature and bringing it closer to people. This kind of original sound design improves the surrounding stressful environment by offering an alternative for noise and everything artificial. Sometimes it is hard to take the truth in because it breaks illusions.
